Tully Humphrey is creative director and designer at TULLY-LOU – fashion forward performance wear designed for yoga, gym, fitness and the street. “Two of my great loves? Yoga and Fashion. As designer and director at Tully Lou, I am very fortunate to be able to combine my rag trade experience with my passion for fashion, yoga and wellness.
“Through teaching and practising Bikram Yoga, I am constantly reminded that wellness is an ongoing relationship with your body. I believe when you feel good, you look good, and vice versa, when you look good, you feel good!”
Tully Lou lets these idioms guide her creativity. It’s born from the desire to create garments that motivate women to get off the couch and MOVE. Do you design the garments yourself?
Yes – all me!
Where do you get the inspiration for the style of your garments?
Travelling, blogs, international catwalks, people around me.
I am also a very visual person. I often find myself looking at different bodies in the yoga room and thinking what would look good for their body shapes and how can I make something that will make them look and feel good? – SO having said that my yoga students also inspire me : )
What made you decide to start your own active wear label?
I always wanted to work for myself and be my own boss! After starting yoga I found it really hard to find yoga/activewear that was a bit more fashion forward and fun! Even when doing physical activity I wanted to express who I was and didn’t want to be boring and wear black all the time. So thats when TULLY LOU was created.
What do you do to keep fit?
I am a yoga teacher so I spend a lot of time bending, twisting and stretching! However I do like to mix my workouts out so I will do a mix of yoga Bikram or Vinyasa, running, reformer Pilates and a weight session thrown in somewhere!
I also make sure I eat clean foods and of course everything in moderation.. I believe that keeping fit is also not just about the physical activity a lot is to do what you put in your mouth!
Which I find a lot of people seem to forget this or don’t know!
Do you only design active wear or casual wear also?
At the moment we are only designing active wear. however I would love to branch out and do more casual wear using organic cotton or recycled fabrics for a more relaxed and chilled out look.
What is it about your garments that make them so comfortable and easy to wear?
I always test my garments before going into production making sure I can move and sweat comfortably.
What is your favourite motivational quote that gets you training and being active on those days when you find it hard?
ohh I have so many! However I often find myself thinking “Its only 30/60 mins out of your day… just do it!! “
